1. I bought jeans in RI today which were a size 6. As ever I’m not sure what to feel about that. I think I am alot healthier than a few months back though because I did 6 hours of lectures today but without feeling like I was about to die from exhaustion immediately afterwards.
2. I was given an Amarylis bulb for christmas by the mother. I love them (as well as hyacinths) because they remind me of my grandad so strongly that they evoke an immediate snapshot of him at the dining room table with all his pots lined up on the windowsill. Also because of the Russell Hoban novel, Amarylis Night and Day, about living inside dreams and Edward Hopper paintings. But anyway the plant has grown 2 feet and will flower anyday. I am obsessed with it and talk to it often. I must take a picture when it bursts.
3. I’m still loving my placement. On friday i went to a food/social thing for the service users. It was fabulous. Shep decreed i must attend every one as i brought home leftover food which was very tasty. I made friends with two sisters from the middle east who were easily the most beautiful women I have ever seen in real life. I was v jealous for a bit but seeing so much diversity and vibrance in one night made a change from fat janners in tracksuits shoving pasties into their mouths and shouting at toddlers also wearing tracksuits.

Here is a list of things which have been happening lately:

  1. Shep dyed my hair for me the other day. Why I hadn’t teped into this resource before I have no legitimate excuse for. Dying the roots of your fiancee’s hair is the anal retentive’s dream activity. He enjoyed it v much!
  2. My hair has become long and unruly since I have quit the hairdressers for an extended period. It all started when I watch that documentary where nice Jamelia went to investigate where hair extensions came from and whether it was ethical or not. I am failry sure (from looking at old pictures) that my hair will look as good as extensons when it gets to that length since it is very thick and heavy on its own. Sadly its now just hitting my shoulders and is already being described as ‘unmanageable”. Also I have been watching the Girls Aloud Off The Record and coveting Sarah Harding’s short and chic hair with increasing envy.
  3. I went flat hunting yesterday with Quirky who, hopefully, has finally binned the substandard boyfriend (he who blamed his indiscretions on her weight!). The final straw was catching him out telling a girl on the internet that she was ‘jealous and possesive’. This was a few weeks after the boyfriend got so suspicious that he made himself a profile on some dating site to try and catch her out.
  4. I’ve handed in my resit paper. I wasn’t a 100% happy with it and it took alot out of me but well its gone now and I’m back to waiting.
  5. At some point I will write a big rant about various equal rights issues I have been discussing lately but for now i’m just sticking with this……..it was announced today in the Herald that the navy are considering allowing women to serve as submariners. This is after years of claiming they cant for health reasons and accomodation needs and blah. Turns out they are turning on their heels because they are running out of chaps. Oh how I laughed. You can make a profession completely gender biased only if you can find enough blokes to staff it, if not then you are a bit fucked really.
  6. I got my Dell Inspiron, in ruby red in the end. I loves it.

Grumpy Bear

Now I am back in the real world (well university) I am annoyed alot of the time. Excuse me while I vent a bit.

  1. I’m not explaining to any more other students/lecturers why i’m not starting my placement until january (because of this resit thing see earlier posts). For future social workers a few of them need to learn about tact and appropriate times to ask personal questions! Hint – in the middle of a seminar in front of lots of people isn’t it.
  2. I am getting too intolerant for group work (or learning sets as they are called at school). I know its all about the forming, storming, norming and performing bollocks but I JUST WANT TO GET ON WITH IT!!
  3. In said learning set on monday we had a ‘lets all introduce ourselves and tell the group intersting stuff’ session (acutally i love stuff like that normally). So I said ‘my name is *** and i live in and i’m from and blah blah and on saturday shep and i watched the trident submarine come into plymouth from our house and now shep is working alongside it so we have been having lots of debates lately’. Then it gets around to the turn of boy i haven’t met before who says ‘well i’m *** and i’m an ex naval submariner’ (plus VERY pointed look at SGT). Like it was a personal attack on him. (just some background on this Devonport has just been awarded the refit contract for trident which is going to cost us £270 million. I’m sure most people might have an opinion about that one way or the other).  How I will end up getting on with this person remains to be seen.
  4. I am making myself unpopular with this group already. We have service users and carers assigned to these learning sets. One of them is brand new to working with students and quite overwhelemd I think. To this end I have been tactfully pulling people up on their use of jargon and also ploughing through the discussion at break neck speed. I’m not having it. Statements like ‘well everybody knows what a standard confidentiality statement should look like’ (only if you are a social work/health and social care student from stage 2 or above!!) are just plain rude.
  5. I have also hit a tolerance barrier with other peoples IT attitudes. In the first year statements like ‘well i’m not very good with/i’m scared of computers’ invoked alot of sympathy from me because although i am quite proficient with IT, as a fellow mature students i had plenty of hang ups about other things at uni. Hearing these disclaimers in year 3 is pushing me a bit. Every year during induction the uni provides several sessions of small group tutions on all the ECDL stuff but also online reserach methods (journal papers etc) and other useful software skills and stuff about recent technology which might be useful. I went to all the sessions last year, learned quite alot, played around with it all and practiced using different things. If you didn’t bother to attend its NOT MY PROBLEM!!  And more to the point HOW DO YOU THINK I LEARNED ALL THIS STUFF?? SPELL CASTING?Also we are 12 months away from employment now and its not like you could sit there in an office and say ‘no actually i can’t update all these case records on to CareFirst or the disabilty register because i don’t really like using computers’.

Meanwhile Shep and I had a nice weekend with a picnic and sunny walks and a night out to Annabel’s to show off my new dress from American Apparel which according to the boy was well worth it! This is what I wore.
