You can have it all but how much do you want it..

July 29, 2009

Being incensed always seems to tempt me back to blogging more quicly than joy. Sad as that maybe.

I am trying to finish my degree before I hatch. This is increasing difficult because a. I have until 21/08 to do it if i want to graduate this year. b. i keep falling asleep. c. i have tons of baby things to do and d. can’t seem to bloody think straight!!
I think i’d get a lot more done if i wasn’t silently ranting about a few things. I feel like i’m letting people down (mostly my daughter) if i don’t finish this year. I’m scared it will be even more difficult next year.

Sadly the main reason is that i don’t want to be at uni with or have to share my graduation with some people i can no longer tolerate being friends with. They would be ‘oh god i’m SO stressed about my law exam thats in 3 weeks and my 3 other essays i didn’t bother to do in the year i don’t know how im going to do it all but i’m going on holiday with my boyfriend for a week’ and also ‘oh god my observation was awful!! Bob was sooooo mean to me he’s so rubbish’ (thats Bob who’s a colleague and friend of mine who has assessed me twice (both v positive experiences) and whom i also trained as a practice assessor). Have you met my friends ‘get off your arse and do some work’ and ‘learn to take some fecking criticism and grow up’?? They are so much fun!

My midwife said yesterday very sagely that ‘its all well and good this idea that women should be able to still to everything while they are pregnant but the reality is – they can’t’ I felt a bit better after that.

Inshallah.

Because theres more to me than just a bump (just about….still!)

We recently had a boss type person of Shep’s over for dinner with us plus PF. It was actually really nice and he was a very interesting chap. Today he sent me a thank you letter. Not an email/text….an actual letter – handwritten and more than two lines. I was astonished! And ever so touched. We have strict traditions in my family about thank you letters for christmas and birthday presents but even those have transferred to emails over the years. I’m just made up!

In other news I have had my second to last practice observation and my last meeting with practice supervisor, practice learning manager and academic tutor. I’ve had some really strong positive feedback which has been nice and a change from stupid assessors telling me I shouldn’t be letting the children I work with touch me (children i work with range from 4 months to 11 – the ones i see most are 2 year olds who climb all over me). Consequently I have been asked to speak at the uni in September to new social work students about social work in the third sector and opportunities to evidence theory in practice. I said yes, if I haven’t hatched by then.

This n that…

April 5, 2009

I recently signed a downing street petition against The Sun newspaper and their constant negative portayal of the social work profession. I have just seen Soldier on the telly in an advert for said newspaper and its help for heroes thing. I am more used to seeing exes on Newsnight.

Uni rejected my application for additiaonl funding since they changed their rules and I have to stay at uni until august. I can’t even explain how pissed off i am about this since 1. i dont have any choice. 2. i’ve never asked before and its my v last opportunity to. 3. knowledge of other circunmstances under which they have shelled out.

I had a nice day yesterday with my mum and maybe cheered up a little bit. She bought me this for the impending arrival.

sheep

It is called a Truffle Sheep.

We went to garden superstore to buy me strawberry plants and geraniums and stripey something and a bird feeder to make me happy again. Well try.

The mission for this afternoon is to try and start some uni work.

RAH!!!

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your swift response. I shall resend my paperwork presently.

Meanwhile, you and your colleagues might want to consider removing internal communication threads before replying to an email originator. Including discriminatory remarks is both insensitive and unprofessional.

Getting down to business

October 11, 2008

I have had a better week this week. Nasty germ has subsided a little bit and things are on the move with the rest of life.

  1. Shep has returned from Norway and even *gasp* had some time off. We have been horse riding and eating out and going to the movies and lots of nice things like that. Later on we are going on the ferry to Mount Egdecombe for a walk and an ice cream.
  2. I have been getting down to it with my uni work. There is a terrifying amount of it but it is at least interesting and engaging.
  3. I have two new learning sets. One I have started working with and the next one I meet on Monday. Multi Agency Working set has already become a problem….After two whole years of shite group dynamics if anyone thinks i’m sitting back and complying for the sake of not arguing they are deleuded. I am many things but never a pushover.
  4. I have rejoined the Service User and Carer Consultative Group attached to my faculty. It has been good to be back. Sometimes it feels like I have my own fan club cheering me on through a difficult degree. At the least I feel like I have a few spare mothers.
  5. I am doing a module on disabilty. This week we have been discussing cultural representations of disability. There are often v stereotyped (either the super cripple – forrest gump or rain man or a villain – dr no, captain hook even or they are pity figures). Soaps are a bit guilty on this front. Disabled people are very underepresented in soaps even though they probably make up a huge number of the audience. Emmerdale I recall had a wheelchair user character for a long time. Eastenders has a toddler with downs syndrome but neither Hollyoaks or Corrie have any disabled characters (correct me if I am wrong). This sorts of presumes that the disabled are excluded from the very ordinary things that soap characters spend their time doing such as chatting in the pub, shopping, getting a hair cut, talking to neighbours in the street or going to work.

I’d like some thoughts on point 5 please xxxxx

I used to be interesting but…

October 1, 2008

I am at present letting the flu get the better of me. Routine seems to consist of: wake up at 5am, remedicate, sleep until about 9, move into lounge. At about 2pm I can manage getting washed and dressed. And so on.

Anyway thats all very fascinating I’m sure. In the meantime I had a v nice weekend. It was the 1st aniversary of George’s death on sunday so I went home for some Mummy time. We pottered around Totnes on saturday, which if you are a tree hugging hippy like me is a shopping paradise. You can even sign up to be buried in a eco coffin down there. I bought these v posh herb planters for my plant friends. I have 6 herb plants now!

On sunday we had a pub lunch at Liverton (bit chavvy actually) and went to Endsleigh for more garden things. I bought the olive tree finally which I have been coveting. They can live for 2000 years apparently!  I am hoping it will like it in the big window in the kitchen. I will be very smug when I get to eat olives off my own tree one day.

Meanwhile I have been back to uni to start lectures. It was ok. Bit same old, same old really but I have yet another new work group which does not contain anyone I don’t get on with unlike previous years. I feel a bit detached from it really.

Shep is away diving. Return date unknown. Boo

HURRAH!!!!

September 23, 2008

I have had the email. I am going into my third year after all. There goes my year out.

I might be a little bit pleased.

This is a picture of Bart, my Build a Bear. The pic is for Lisa.
